Ports Of New York/New Jersey Might Install Traffic Controller For Mega Ships

Posted on Jun 30

The ports of NY/NJ are discussing the installation of a traffic controller, similar to an air traffic control entity at airports, at the port gateway to mitigate or hopefully prevent backups and delays caused by the arrival of megaships up to 18,000 TEU that are now able to enter the port after the Bayonne Bridge has been raised to 251 feet.Since the opening of the raised bridge 6 vessels with capacity of 10,000 TEU or slightly more have moved into the port, with the arrival of the first 14,000 TEU vessel expected for this fall.As larger ships require greater coordination and communication between the various parties involved in these moves (mega vessels need to move in and out of the port at slower speeds, can only move in and out at certain times ahead of high or low tide, and generally require more careful planning in the interaction with other vessel traffic) the need for a centralized entity that takes on these coordination tasks seems to be growing. The issue will be discussed during a meeting of the Vessel Coordination Work Group recently formed by the Port Authority.
