The two largest container shipping alliances announced service cuts for the first week of October, China’s Golden Week, as China’s factories shut down during the nation’s celebrations.
So far, the alliances have announced that a total of nine sailings from Asia to the North America West Coast will be cancelled, four to the East Coast and two to the Gulf Coast. The voided sailings were scheduled to reach North America between October 20 and November 17.
OOCL, a member of the OCEAN Alliance along with its parent COSCO Shipping and French carrier CMA CGM, plans to withdraw total capacity withdrawn totals over 75,000 TEU on six TPEB sailings from China and Taiwan over the period from September 30 through October 12, three of which call Los Angeles and Long Beach ports with the remaining ones calling Pacific Northwest ports.
The 2M Alliance comprised of Maersk and MSC will cancel three sailings to the West Coast and two to the East Coast, totaling about 50,000 TEU in capacity.
