Borders between the United States and Canada will temporarily close to non-essential travel while goods will still be allowed to move between the countries as a measure to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
President Trump announced this morning via Twitter: “We will be, by mutual consent, temporarily closing our Northern Border with Canada to non-essential traffic. Trade will not be affected. Details to follow!”
Trucks traffic still moves relatively freely between the two countries.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced sweeping restrictions that closed the country’s borders to most non-Canadian and U.S. citizens already on Monday, March 16, , with exemptions for trade.
Trucks handled most of the US$560 billion in merchandise trade between the U.S. and Canada in 2019.
