Both chambers of the Canadian Parliament today voted to adopt the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

The agreement will be officially ratified once the Canadian Governor-General has approved it, it will then formally replace the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

After the US Senate voted in favor of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) by a margin of 89 to 10 this afternoon the measure will now be sent to President Trump who is expected to sign it next week.

According to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), will “support mutually beneficial trade leading to freer markets, fairer trade, and robust economic growth in North America.”

After the House of Representatives passed the new trade agreement with Canada and Mexico overwhelmingly on December 19, 2019, the U.S. Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday voted 25-3 to move the USMCA Implementation Act forward.

The next step is for the full Senate to approve the revised agreement,

Mexico’s Senate has already ratified the USMCA, and Canada’s Parliament is expected to take up the trade pact soon after returning from its winter break.

The U.S. House of Representatives approved the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) Implementation Act yesterday. The Senate is not expected to take up the USMCA until after the impeachment trial, which is expected to begin in early January.

USMCA will replace the North American Free Trade Agreement that went into effect on Jan. 1, 1994.

While Mexico’s Senate has already ratified the new USMCA, while Canada’s Parliament is expected to take up the new trade pact only after lawmakers return from their winter break at the end of January 2020.

The U.S. House of Representatives and the Trump administration have reached an agreement to move forward with the White House’s replacement for the North American Free Trade Agreement, top Democrats announced on Tuesday. Both sides had worked for more than a year to resolve concerns about enforcement tools for labor and environmental standards under the new deal, known as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. In order for the agreement to be approved, the Trump Administration must ratify and submit legislation to Congress in the coming days, which will then open a 90-day window for Congressional approval of the USMCA.

The House is expected to vote on ratification before the end of this year, but the Senate is not expected to take up the matter until after the new Year.
